What the f*** is a Sound Supervisor?

In Television, the 'Sound Supervisor' is the person who is ultimately responsible for the programme audio (what the listener at home hears).

Generally - in the UK - we'll be backed-up by a "Guarantee Engineer" who is the person tasked with looking after talkback (comms) and all the audio infrastructure, such that if something should happen whilst we're on-air and our fingers are busy mixing, we've got someone who knows the rig inside out and can dive in.

We will normally mix the show or event from a control room attached to the studio, or a truck parked next to, or away from, the stage, set or studio. So we choose a "floor" team who become our eyes and ears at the business end of things, and it's these floor sound assistants whose job it is to fit microphones to talent, liaise with bands and do changeovers, and generally keep things running whilst we sit in the nicely air conditioned room sliding things up and down or twisting knobs, and eating all the free snacks.
